A cab driver in Las Vegas returned a bag loaded with bundles of cash, and his act of honesty earned him the cab company’s distinction as “driver of the year.”

Gerardo Gamboa, 54, a native of Mabalacat, Pampanga but now a resident of Nevada, found the brown paper bag with the money after dropping off his passenger, who was apparently a gambler who won big. The 13-year cab driver for Yellow Checker Star, picked up the passenger from the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino and dropped him off at the Palms Palace.

After picking up another passenger, a hotel doorman noticed the bag and called Gamboa’s attention to it.  Gamboa first thought it was a bag of chocolates.  When he looked at the contents, he was surprised to see six huge bundles of $100 bills worth $50,000 each.

He then told his passenger, “You are my witness on this,” and called his dispatcher right away.

Gamboa secured the money-bag and surrendered it to his employer.  The taxi company started its investigation to track down the bag’s owner though Cosmopolitan’s records, whose identity was also confirmed by policemen before being declared as the rightful owner.

The owner of the money, who was playing at the Cosmopolitan before losing the bag of cash, informed Yellow Checker Star he wanted to see Gamboa and reward the taxi driver for his honesty.

However, Gamboa said, “If he doesn’t give me anything, that’s okay. I’m not waiting for any kind of return. I just wanted to do the right thing, and I appreciate what the company did for me.”

Yellow Checker Star awarded Gamboa some perks, including a bonus worth $1,120, and dinner for two at an exclusive restaurant.  The taxi company also named him “Driver of the Year”.

Aside from good karma, Gamboa has become an instant celebrity after fielding interviews from several major US news outlets.
