Do you have health issues? Consult a 'albularyo' expert. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will shortly regulate the practice of traditional healers in the country, commonly known as 'albularyos'.
According to the Manila Bulletin, the DOST-led Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) is developing recommendations to integrate non-formal health practitioners into mainstream medical practice.
PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jamie Montoya stated during the 2015 Global Forum on Health Solutions for the World that the study, which began in 2012, will help the government ensure an evidence-based healthcare practice in the country and protect the public from falling into the hands of fake healers.
He further stated that a fund in excess of P100 million was used to do research on the aforementioned issue.

DOH Supported

The Department of Health (DOH) expressed its support for DOST's initiative, stating that clinically proved herbal medicines can assist treat a variety of maladies and illnesses.
The department also approved for medical use many plants, including akapulko, ampalaya, bawang, bayabas, lagundi, niyog-niyogan, sambong, tsaang gubat, pansit-pansitan, and yerba buena, through its Traditional Health Program.

A Less Expensive Option

Unlike licensed doctors, who typically prescribe expensive contemporary drugs, albularyos rely solely on widely available herbal resources in their healing practice, motivating people to come to them, particularly those who do not have the money to seek professional help.

Final Words

Montoya stated that the regulation will most likely begin in the early months of 2016 and will include 'hilot' practitioners, or those who are participating in chiropractic manipulation informally, in the certification.
