A paramedic saves the pediatricianwho saved his life 26 years ago. The determination and dedication of pediatrician Michael Shannon, who refused to leave Chris Trokey's side during the most critical 24 hours after his birth in 1985, saved Chris Trokey's life.
Doctors gave Trokey a 50/50 chance of survival when he was born weighing only 3.2 pounds. Dr. Shannon, on the other hand, stayed with the baby and worked around the clock to ensure he stabilized and survived.
Trokey never expected to be given the opportunity to repay the favor 26 years later. Their incredible story was told by KTLA 5 on March 29 during a fundraising event for the St. Baldrick's charity, which will benefit childhood cancer research, where the two were reunited.
Shannon was involved in a car accident in 2011 while driving his SUV along the Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point. A truck pinned his vehicle underneath, causing it to catch fire.
Trokey, who was 26 years old at the time and worked as a paramedic for the Orange County Fire Authority, was among the first to respond to the emergency call.
Shannon's car was already engulfed in flames, and his leg had begun to burn. Trokey and the other rescuers worked tirelessly to put out the fire and save Shannon.
The pediatrician sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he spent 45 days recovering. As a result of the tragic accident, he must have his toes amputated.
Shannon could only reminisce with fondness and perplexity about how their fates were intertwined - saving each other's lives almost 30 years apart - when the two were reunited for the charity event on Sunday.

Final Words

Trokey now has a family and a child. Dr. Michael Shannon is, of course, the pediatrician for his young son.
