HUBEI, China – A mother’s love is truly immeasurable. These words were proven by a Chinese mom as she pushed her kid to safety just before falling to her death in an escalator accident in a department store, reports say.

Xiang Liujuan, 30 years old, was holding her son in front of her while on an escalator last Saturday; while roaming around at a department store at Jingzhou in the central province of Hubei, China.

A footage from a security camera was posted online in China, and showed a panel in the floor giving way as Xiang stepped off the escalator. While the mother was falling half-way through, she managed to push her son forward, where a nearby shop assistant pulled the boy to safety.

The escalator continued rolling, and for a few seconds more, the mother was seen disappearing downwards into the mechanism, despite the effort of one staff who was able to briefly grab her hand.

The Telegraph reported that firefighters rushed in to rescue the woman, but had difficulty cutting the machine open. After four hours of struggle, the machine was cut open and the woman was recovered, but paramedics see “no sign of life” on the heroic mother.

According to Mirror, an unnamed source confirmed that maintenance had just been carried out on the escalator at the Anliang Department Store, when a worker forgot to screw the access cover back into place.

The accident, which was captured by the security camera, was one of the trending topics on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo last Monday.

Online users around the world expressed anger on the shop’s management; as most of them pointed out the lack of priority on safety of shoppers. Others were furious at the rescuers who took a long time on trying to save the mother.

Most online users were moved by the woman’s final actions, as she didn’t waste any second to push her child to safety.

May this incident be a reminder to mall owners and other establishments with escalators to give priority and special attention to their escalator operation and maintenance.

Warning: The footage is disturbing.
