MANILA, Philippines – For the first time ever, there will be no clash between the police and militants during a State of the Nation Address (SONA).

As seeming proof the bad blood is gone, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa shook hands with Bayan Muna Secretary General Renato Reyes outside the Batasang Pambansa where President Rodrigo Duterte is set to give his first SONA.

“Peace tayo today”, Dela Rosa reportedly told Reyes.

The PNP chief later said that President Rodrigo Duterte might even possibly go outside the building to meet the rallyists.

“Kilala natin si Presidente, walang kiyeme-kiyeme. ‘Pag gusto niyang lumapit sa mga tao, lalapit ‘yan. Oo, may posibilidad,” he told GMA News.

[We know the President, he has no frills. If he wants to be go near people, he will go near them. Yes, there is a possibility.]

During his inauguration, Duterte had the Presidential Security Group (PSG) bring the rallyists to meet him in Malacañang Palace in an unprecedented move.

For his part, Reyes thanked Duterte and invited him to join them in their informal version of the SONA outside the Batasang Pambansa.

“The President has shown himself to be more open than his predecessors were. We hope he would continue to engage the people in dialogue and move to address their most urgent issues and concerns. We reiterate that, should he have time, he is more than welcome to attend our rally tomorrow outside Batasan,” he said.
