- Pia Wurtzbach calls on the public to help her raise HIV awareness
- She did this through a video posted on Instagram
- She calls on people to post photos of HIV-related buzzwords that she will collate in one video
December 1 is the global HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) awareness day and Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach is calling on everyone to raise awareness on this infection.
The beauty queen posted a video on Instagram urging her fans and other people as well to do their own share on helping people be informed of the epidemic.
“HIV infection is rising in many parts of the world and I’m calling out on you to help us spread awareness,” said Pia on the Instagram video.
“All you have to do is take a photo of a word or short phrase written on your hand, words like ‘prep’, ‘safe sex’, ‘no violence’, ‘equal access’, ‘get tested’ or ‘know your status’, words like that,” she specified.
She asks those participating to use the hashtag #HIVPrevention and tag the @MissUniverse Instagram account.
Pia will be collating the entries into one awareness video.
During the pageant last year, Pia said in the question-and-answer portion that she plans to be an advocate for HIV awareness when she wins the crown. This answer has delighted many advocates of the infection.
Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that there are around 70 million people affected with HIV and 35 million have died from the disease.
The Philippines, sadly, is among the countries with a fast-paced rise of HIV infections. Official figures reveal that there are 25 Filipinos affected with the epidemic everyday. Worse, over 80% of these infections involve the youth aged 15 to 30.
The Department of Health said that by the end of the year, there can be a total of 55,000 HIV-infected Filipinos.
HIV is often caught from unprotected sexual intercourse. It is the onset of a condition called acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) when the immune system is already disrupted due to HIV.
People are encouraged to have themselves tested for early prevention and treatment.
