MANILA, Philippines – Two men believed to be members of an organized robbery group were killed in a shootout with police in Novaliches, Quezon City after they robbed a supermarket employee in broad daylight on Wednesday.

One of the slain robbers was identified as Jovin Santos from Tanza, Cavite based on IDs found in his wallet.

According to QCPD Station 4’s P/Insp. Randy Llanderal, Santos — along with his two cohorts — had just robbed Dominador Gorgonio Jr. who was carrying the supermarket’s earnings of P620,000  en route to the bank at around 10:40 AM when they were chanced upon by PO Israel Martinez and two other policemen.

A shootout then ensued, resulting in the death of Santos and his unidentified companion. Their third colleague managed to escape with the money.

Martinez, meanwhile, was brought to the Chinese General Hospital after being wounded in the left arm and neck in the shootout. A bystander who was hit by a stray bullet was also brought to the same hospital.

Llanderal told News5 that based on their movements, Santos and his companions could have belonged to a syndicate.

For his part, QCPD Director Chief Supt. Edgardo Tinio commended Martinez and his colleagues for their bravery even as he announced follow-up operations to capture the third suspect and recover the money.

Martinez, who is in stable condition in the hospital, was also awarded with a spot promotion and a “Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting” for his role in the encounter.
