MANILA, Philippines – A man has been arrested for trying to blackmail a woman on Facebook by threatening to spread her nude photos if she refuses to have sex with him.

The suspect was identified in an ABS-CBN News article as Regino Echas, 24, from Caloocan City who works as a graphic designer. He reportedly uses many aliases on social media including ‘David Garcia’.

Echas’ alleged victim, a 19-year-old female whose name has been withheld by authorities, said the suspect contacted her on Facebook last January 31 and demanded that she sleep with him or he will publish her nude photos on social media.

The victim added she has already blocked the man on Facebook but he kept on sending her messages using different accounts.

He also sent her nude photos to her mother who is working outside the country. The victim was then advised to seek help from the authorities.

Operatives from the Philippine National Police – Anti-Cybercrime Division set up an entrapment operation in Cubao, Quezon City on Wednesday, February 1.

The suspect was caught and he admitted to blackmailing the victim. He claimed to have obtained the woman’s nude photos from a chat room.

Echas is now facing charges of grave coercion and violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 and Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009.

Meanwhile, the authorities warned social media users to be more cautious in sharing their personal details, especially nude pictures online as they could end up being preyed upon by criminals.
