- Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is said to be eyeing the BSP top post
- Arroyo was earlier rumored to replace House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez
- But this could be a tactic from the Pampanga representative’s camp to make Alvarez feel ‘not too threatened’ by her
MANILA, Philippines – Amid talks that she will be replacing Pantaleon Alvarez as Speaker of the House, former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is reportedly more interested to head the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) instead.
Arroyo, who had just been freed from hospital detention by the current administration, is currently a Deputy House Speaker. She is close to President Rodrigo Duterte and has been rumored to replace Alvarez.
However, according to Boo Chanco in his Philstar column on Wednesday, March 1, the former president is actually eyeing the BSP post to replace outgoing governor Amando Tetangco.
Chanco gave two possible reasons why Arroyo shifted her interest from the House top post to BSP: “Maybe she wants to show she is still capable of meeting new challenges in her senior years. Maybe she is getting sick of politics and wants to redeem her reputation.”
Another possibility is that she could be sending a message to Speaker Alvarez amid rumors of a possible take-over, to make the latter feel ‘not too threatened’ by her.
Also, she may be trying to prevent a member of the ruling PDP-Laban from being appointed to the position, Chanco suggested.
Or perhaps, she may take the post and hand it over later to Peter Favila; one of those also being groomed to replace Tetangco. Favila is her former secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Nevertheless, Chanco said Arroyo could be a good choice as the next BSP governor.
“The country is probably not done with her yet. Hopefully, she has learned her lessons too and will not allow some people close to her to ruin again her chance to shine,” the columnist said.
