Twenty students have died and several others were injured during a freak accident while swimming at a popular tourist spot in Ghana. Huge trees fell from the waterfalls and crushed the students.
According to Business Standard, Ghana National Fire Service spokesman Prince Billy Anaglate said the unusual incident took place on March 19 at the Kintampo waterfalls; a popular tourist destination in the Brong-Ahafo region.
Strong winds due to a brewing storm uprooted the trees and fell on the high school students from Wenchi Senior High School and other tourists.
“A huge tree fell at the top when the rains began and crashed the revelers. Most of them are students of the Wenchi Senior High School. Others are tourists. We are trying to save those who are trapped by cutting the trees with chainsaws,” an eyewitness said.
18 students died at the scene, while two others died while receiving treatment in a hospital. 11 others, including one of the school administrators in charge of the trip, were brought to the hospital.
“We extend our condolences to the families of the dead and pray for the injured,” the country’s tourism minister Catherine Abelema Afeku said in a statement.
