  • The revelation was confirmed by Star Cinema director Malou Santos and other ABS-CBN executives
  • Locsin’s health condition is the main reason

Star Cinema’s managing director Malou Santos confirmed that actress Angel Locsin will no longer fly as the Filipina superhero ‘Darna’ in Star Cinema’s movie adaptation of the Mars Ravelo-created character.

Santos, who disclosed that Locsin’s health condition was mainly the reason, noted that Star Cinema was deeply sad over the latest development.

“Sobrang nalungkot kasi nung una, nung nalaman namin na mayroon siyang problema sa likod, sinabihan na namin siya na she cannot play Darna. But because deep in our hearts na siya lang ang pwedeng maging Darna, we gave her the chance and she promised to do the therapy na magpapagaling siya para sa kanyang likod,” Santos was quoted in an article published by ABS-CBN News.

[We were extremely sad because at first, when we learned that she has a back problem we told her she can no longer play Darna. But because deep in our hearts we knew that it was only her who can be Darna, we gave her the chance and she promised to get better.]

Expressing sadness, Santos revealed that three weeks ago Locsin felt the pain again on her back. Thus, she added, the final verdict that the actress could no longer portray the role was decided.

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN president and CEO Carlo Katigbak assured Locsin’s fans that even if the actress can no longer play Darna, they can still expect to see their idol in other projects.

As such, Katigbak said the safety and health of Locsin became their priority; further noting that the actress is still one of the biggest stars of the network and that she has several projects to do as a Kapamilya.

Director Erik Matti , on the other hand, stressed that he and Star Cinema are just after the welfare of Locsin.

For her part, Locsin, who played Darna on television in 2005, said she has already accepted the fact the she can no longer play Darna as she called on her fans to support the new Darna.
