Meet Jay Kummer “Dodoy” Teberio; a 21-year-old student who sells bottled water to pursue his dreams and provide for his family. He graduated March 15 from the University of Cebu with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Major in Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health.
Armed with a warm smile, a dazzling outfit, a funny performance, and an aura as refreshing as the water he’s selling, he is often seen playfully vending along the streets of A. Soriano in Cebu City.
Despite the seemingly happy mask, he struggled everyday for 10 years to face the challenges of life. He managed to juggle his selling and schooling efficiently. He lives in a humble shanty in Sitio Mahayahay, Barangay Carreta, Cebu City with his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. Since his father’s health deteriorated – who was also a bottled water vendor himself, he has assumed the role as the family’s bread winner; bringing home 500 pesos to support his family, and of course his studies.
Dodoy also received a plaque and a cash prize during the 80th Charter Day Celebration of the city for his determination and inspiring story.
He advised the Filipino youth to keep dreaming and to stay focused to achieve it.
“This is my message to other people or youth nga ang ka pobre gyud dili babag aron dili ta maka-eskwela, kun duna tay kalisdanan sa kinabuhi kailangan paningkamot aron makab-ot nato ang pangandoy sa kinabuhi, never give up, go lang ng go,” Teberio said.
[This is my message to other people or youth. Poverty nor life’s difficulties is not a hindrance for us not to go to school. We need to exert effort to achieve our dreams.]
Not only did he inspire the youth, he also caught the attention of the bottled water company he is selling. The company gave his family cash and decided to document his daily life and turn it into an advertisement.
Now that he was recognized by the government and the company, providing him job opportunities now would be a good idea.
Who wouldn’t want this kind of a hardworking man to be in his team anyway. The future already looks bright for him.
