MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte finally revealed his position regarding same-sex marriage and it is a big NO for the lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transexuals and queers sector.

Speaking before the Filipino community in Myanmar early Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte said he has nothing against gays and lesbians but emphasized that marriage is only for man and woman. He said that the Philippines cannot legalize same sex marriage the same way that the US and European countries did.

In his speech, as reported by Rappler, he said: “There’s no gender, because you can be he or she… that’s their culture. That’s only for them. That can’t be applied to us, we’re Catholics. And there is the Civil Code, which is you can only marry a woman for me, and for woman to marry a man. That’s the law in the Philippines.”

Duterte also pointed out that he has relatives who are gay but he also stressed that God made them what they are so they should remain that way and be contented. However, the said pronouncement is quite a contradiction in his campaign stance expressing his openness on allowing same-sex marriage. During his campaign, he was caught saying in “The Leader I Want” series“Definitely, the gays were created by God… God made them so medyo nagkamali ‘yung bilangan diyan sa Bible (there is a slight error in the Bible). [It should be] Adam, Eve, and the gays.”

Last October, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, one of Duterte’s allies, also said he will be pushing for the same-sex marriage to be allowed in the Philippines. However, he was also clear in saying it will not be their priority.
