A transmission tower of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) collapsed after a huge fire at a residential area where the tower stood weakened its foundation.

The tower did not topple completely but it leaned dangerously in front of the northbound toll exit of South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The SLEX management had to close the southbound and northbound of Alabang viaduct to vehicular traffic for about an hour; causing monstrous traffic on both sides of the expressway.

“Because of the imminent danger this situation posed to motorists, we closed both the northbound and southbound Alabang viaduct at around 9:10 AM to ensure the public’s safety,” the SLEX management said in a statement.

According to GMA, the Manila Toll Expressway Systems, Inc, operator of SLEX, took to Twitter to say that as of 8 a.m. Thursday, April 20, northbound traffic remains heavy.

Efforts to raise the transmission tower failed on Wednesday. And as of Thursday morning, two cranes are still trying to lift the tower.
