• President Duterte told OFWs in the Middle East that the separate department for OFWs will come “in a few months”
• The creation of such an agency was one of Duterte’s proposals during the 2016 election campaign
• Pending the creation of the OFW Department, the President urged OFWs to relay their concern directly to him

Speaking before members of the Filipino community in Manama, the capital city of Bahrain, during his state visit there, President Rodrigo Duterte said a separate department that would focus on the plight and welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) will come in a few months.

“In a few months, you will have a Department on OFW only,” the President said.

The creation of the aforementioned department was one of Duterte’s proposals during the May 2016 election campaign, as per Rappler.

Earlier, the President told OFWs in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia that the creation of the Department for OFWs does not belong to him but to Congress.

“The OFW department will be separate from the Department of Labor. It is coming, but it would be in Congress… There will be a separate agency for sailors. Maritime authority will also be separated,” he said; adding ““The creation of a department does not belong to me.”

In the meantime, the President said OFWs can relay their concerns to him pending the creation of the agency for them.

“I want you to have direct line with me, if not you can call any relative to call my attention,” he said.
