- Lopez said she already asked President Duterte’s permission to work with the rebels
- The environment secretary said the NPA are kind
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Gina Lopez said she wants to work with The New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, in transforming communities around mining sites in Agusan del Sur into E3 (Ecological, Economic and Educational) zones.
As mentioned in an Inquirer story dated April 21, 2017, the Environment Secretary said she already asked President Rodrigo Duterte if she could work with the rebels. In fact, she said she already met them and found them to be kind.
“I already asked the President if I can work with the NPA. In fact, I met them two days ago. I like the NPA. The guy we met was an ex-seminarian. We can’t market the place and do anything if there’s fighting and, at the end of the day, what do they want? They just want a better life,” Lopez said.
“I love the NPA. They’re kind. I feel if you handle them the right way, they’ll be good because they’re also looking for ways to survive,” she added.
