Ateneo Lady Eagles proved to be the toughest opponent for this year’s UAAP Women’s Volleyball crown as they repeated their win in the first round against last year’s champs, DLSU Lady Spikers. The Lady Eagles is currently the top seed going into the semifinals after they won the four-setter match held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, 12-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19.

Rookie player Jules Samonte filled in for top gunner Jhoanna Maraguinot in the much-anticipated DLSU vs ADMU match. Samonte was lauded as the player of the game with 10 points off 9 hits and an ace. Michelle Morente and Bea de Leon each had 14. On the DLSU side, four were able to score in double digits off the loss: Kim Dy, 15; Des Cheng, 13; Majoy Baron, 11; Tin Tiamzon 10.

Meanwhile, the UST Growling Tigresses finished their elimination round with a huge come-from-behind win against the NU Lady Bulldogs. Dropping their first two sets, they managed to gain back the momentum in the third and fourth sets to seal it off with a win, 20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12.

This is the first time that UST has made it to the Final 4 in four years. Sisi Rondina, EJ Laure and Ria Meneses powered the squad with a total of 32 points. Jaja Santiago scored 30 points but still not enough to rally a win for the Lady Bulldogs.

The UAAP Women’s Volleyball semifinals will start on April 19. Facing the Ateneo Lady Eagles in the semis is FEU Lady Tamaraws, who romped away with a dominant win against the UP Fighting Maroons last Wednesday. DLSU Lady Spikers, on the other hand, will be facing the UST Growling Tigresses in the semis. Both Ateneo and DLSU have a twice-to-beat advantage after finishing first and second after the eliminations.

The semifinals will be held alternately at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and SM Mall of Asia Arena.
