MANILA, Philippines – Former TV5 news anchor Cherie Mercado has resigned from her post as spokesperson for the Department of Transportation (DOTr); ten months after quitting the network and joining the government.
In her lengthy post on Facebook, Mercado said her reasons for quitting the job are personal, mainly about losing time for the family because of the demands of the job.
Mercado said she loved her work, her colleagues at the department, and her boss, Secretary Art Tugade, but her family has been suffering from her ‘absence’.
“I saw my daughters fighting, grades going down, my seeds of teaching respect slowly forgotten, spending too much time on the iPad. They could be having seizures beside me and I might not notice because work is constantly demanding my time and attention,” Mercado wrote.
“My husband was supportive all throughout but I know he was feeling my absence,” she said.
She’s also been suffering from headaches and sleepless nights because of the stress made even worse by the guilt of being unable to fulfill her other job as a mother and as a wife.
“I tried for the last few months to balance, but I failed. And then I knew it was time to choose,” Mercado added.
Mercado joined the Duterte government in July, the second media personality from TV5 to do so; the other being Martin Andanar who was appointed as Secretary of the Presidential Communications Operation Office (PCOO).
Meanwhile, DOTr Usec. Cesar Chavez has confirmed to DZRH that Mercado has indeed submitted her resignation to Secretary Tugade.
