ABU DHABI, UAE  –  A hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) was left to care for a baby boy, nicknamed Sebastian, after his Filipina mother abandoned him to avoid the possibility of being imprisoned.

Apparently, the mother is married back home but got impregnated by another man in Abu Dhabi. She reportedly fled the UAE shortly after giving birth and returned to the Philippines out of fear that her husband may find out about her infidelity.

According to The National, the Filipina woman was rushed to the University Hospital on Airport Road. Complications from birth arose and the child had to be taken into an intensive care unit (ICU) for monitoring.

The woman, who had no insurance, asked permission to leave the hospital so she could arrange payments. She hasn’t returned since; leaving the baby in the hospital’s care.

“We couldn’t leave the baby so we took on the responsibility and have been caring for him for the last nine months,’ said Dr. Shabeer Nellikode; managing director and founder of the hospital.

The hospital said they approached the Philippine embassy about the boy but was told that the mother was not interested in the baby.

“The lady left behind the baby and escaped from the country. She was afraid that her husband would come to know about the baby and this would jeopardize their marriage,” said Dr. Nellikode.

It was the staff of the hospital who learned that the mother is actually married in the Philippines and was also in a relationship with another guy in UAE.

Dr. Nellikode said he is planning to travel to the Philippines to see if the child can be adopted since adoption in the UAE is a complicated and lengthy process. Besides, the mother did not leave any details about her passport, marriage certificate or the name of the father before leaving.

Sought for comment, the Philippine embassy also refused to give any details on the story; saying negotiations are ongoing.
