United States President Donald trump said the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is on the run and will soon be wiped out of Iraq and Syria.
According to the Philippine News Agency, President Trump made the statement via Twitter on Wednesday, July 12; days after the Iraqi forces, with the help of U.S.-led coalition, successfully re-took Mosul City from the hardline Islamist militants.
“ISIS is on the run and will soon be wiped out of Syria and Iraq, illegal border crossings are way down (75 percent) and MS 13 (Mara Salvatrucha) gangs are being removed,” Trump tweeted.
Trump congratulated Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi for the liberation of Mosul.
Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, Commander of US forces in Iraq, said losing Mosul, a jewel of the so-called caliphate, is a decisive blow to ISIS. He said, however, that the victory of the Iraqi forces in Mosul alone does not eliminate the terrorists.
“Make no mistake, this victory alone does not eliminate ISIS, and there’s still tough fighting ahead. There are still pockets of resistance in Mosul, hold-outs, and hidden IEDs that will take weeks to clear, as well as remaining ISIS enclaves in Hawija and western Anbar,” Townsend said.
