Filipinos are so familiar with that catchy line from a probiotic drink product, but what is this circulating news that there’s a new ‘healthy beer’?
Beer, as we already know, have good health benefits if taken in moderation. But now, an innovation tells us more reasons to drink the ice cold relaxing beverage.
A new variation of beer could actually boost digestive health and help fend off deadly diseases. Researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have come up with a concoction containing a probiotic called lactobacillus paracasei L26, which is known for neutralizing toxins and viruses and also promotes a healthy digestive and immune system.
The microorganism in the new beer has also been proven to boost brain health among people with dementia and help improve emotions.
The beer was the brainchild of Miss Chan Mei Zhi Alcine; a food science and technology student for her final year project.
Alcine, head researcher of the probiotic brew, told NUS News: “The health benefits of probiotics are well known. While good bacteria are often present in food that have been fermented, there are currently no beers in the market that contain probiotics,” she added.
The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics recommends one billion units of probiotic, which amazingly is found in every three ounces of the drink.
To keep the probiotics ‘alive,’ the beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized during the production stage.
Each batch takes around a month to brew.
Each serving contains a 3.5 alcohol percentage.
Associate Prof Liu Shao Quan said: “I am confident that the probiotic gut-friendly beer will be well-received by beer drinkers, as they can now enjoy their beers and be healthy.”
