The police are now investigating a gruesome incident captured on a video wherein a woman can be seen being brutally beaten by three men with a hockey stick in India

The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Meena Kashyap from Patiala, Punjab.

The suspects are believed to be her brother-in-law and his friends. The violent attack came amid dispute over dowry and after the victim has allegedly given birth to a girl which her husband’s family refused to accept.

The dowry involved was said to be amounting to 700,000 Rupees or roughly $10,800. Dowries, which have been outlawed, are still prevalent in some Indian states where the bride’s family are obliged to give her husband the money as a means of supporting herself during marriage.

The suspects reportedly attacked the woman last week after her family claimed she had lodged a violence complaint in April.

“We had complained about the issue last year itself but nothing was being done regarding that,” the victim’s father told The Hindustan Times. “They have been married for the past two years now and have a girl child. Their family asked for 700,000 rupees for dowry.”

The police are now preparing charges against the woman’s husband, Daljit Singh, his brother Kamaljeet and a friend known only as Gaurav.

The three suspects will be charged with”trespassing” and “voluntarily causing hurt”, among others.
