A group of heavily armed men staged a surprise attack on a military camp near Marawi City in Lanao Del Sur early Sunday morning, August 20.

As per the GMA story dated August 20, 2017, the armed men believed to be supporters or sympathizers of the ISIS-linked Maute Group that is currently locked in fierce fighting with government forces staged an attack against the detachment of the 55th Infantry Battalion.

The camp was being manned by members of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit or CAFGU when the attack took place. No one was reportedly hurt in the attack.

The security around Marawi City has been heightened following the attack. A joint police and military team was created to conduct pursuit operation against the armed men.

Meanwhile, the fierce battle between the remaining members of the Maute Group and government troops continues. The terrorists, numbering between 70 and 80, are believed to be hiding inside the grand mosque in the battle zone.
