A 15-year-old student was killed when a group of suspected New People’s Army (NPA) opened fire at a group of soldiers repairing a daycare center in Cawayan, Masbate.
Spokesman of the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division, Captain Joash Pramis identified the student as Vincent Pekiro.
Vincent was apparently in the area watching soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Battalion repair a daycare center in Barangay Libertad when a group of rebels attacked and started shooting the soldiers, according to a story by GMA News.
“According to the troops, they heard five shots and the first one hit the boy. He was watching what the soldiers were doing at that time,” Pramis said.
Pramis further explained that the soldiers decided not to shoot back at the suspected NPA group as it may endanger the other civilians in the vicinity. But Pramis confirmed that troops will be sent to go after the rebels.
