The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has become the latest victim of fake news after a false report circulated online that said CBCP President Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas supposedly condemned the killing of Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute.

“Once more, CBCP is the hapless victim of fake news. Going viral on social media is a ‘report’ that CBCP regrets the killing of Messrs. Hapilon and Maute,” Archbishop Villegas said in a statement published in the CBCP News Twitter page.

According to the fake news, Villegas allegedly said the killing of the two top leaders of the terrorist group – Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute – that laid siege to Marawi City is “solid evidence that EJK (extrajudicial killing) is alive in the country.”

The false report also included a fabricated quote from the archbishop that read: “Sana man lang binigyan nila ng konting respeto ‘yung bangkay ng tao. Binaril e sa ulo pa, pwede namang sa katawan para ma-minimize ang damage.”

[They should have at least accorded the corpse a little respect. He was shot in the head when he could have been shot in the body to minimize the damage]

The CBCP never made such statement,” Villegas said.
