MANILA, Philippines – Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal has passed away Wednesday morning, October 18, after being hospitalized for a week.
The 86-year-old prelate was rushed to the Perpetual Succor Hospital in Cebu City last October 11 and is said to have recovered from coma two days later.
However, his condition did not improve much despite undergoing dialysis upon the recommendation of his physician and remains in a semi-comatose state.
The cardinal was earlier diagnosed with complications of pneumonia and collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest before he was taken to the hospital, according to Cebu Archdiocese spokesperson Msgr. Joseph Tan.
“It is confirmed. Our beloved Cardinal has returned to our Creator at 7:28 this morning,” said Tan in a statement on Wednesday. “It also surprised me that he died because his condition was stable the past days. This is a sad day for us.”
Cardinal Vidal has been in and out of the hospital over the past three years due to pneumonia.
