Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Attorney Salvador Panelo stated that they are mulling to ask the Supreme Court to stop the Ombudsman from investigating the President’s wealth.

Panelo shared that the probe on President Duterte’s wealth by the Ombudsman should be stopped because Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang violated the law.

[What the President is reacting about is Carandang violating the law. The law states that you are not allowed to reveal investigatory records when you are going to investigate someone. You are preventing that respondent to a fair trial because you will destroy his image.]

Panelo also clarified the sitting President’s immunity from suit. He said that the Section 22 of Republic Act 6770 that allows them to investigate impeachable officers violates the sitting President’s doctrine of immunity against suit. Such suits will only lessen the President’s efficiency because it will take much of his time to defend himself.

[We will go to the Supreme Court to stop them.]

Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang had been firm that he observed confidentiality with the investigation and was “only reading the documents presented to him by the media in an ambush interview,” as per an article by Inquirer.
