- Cops caught turning away CCTV before conducting anti-drug ops in Tondo slum
- 3 killed in operations—one of them a 60-year-old man
- Deceased’s granddaughter witnessed his death, said he was unarmed and did not fight back
MANILA, Philippines – The Manila Police District (MPD) may find itself in hot water after a CCTV recorded one of its men tampering another CCTV during an anti-drug operation in Brgy. 19, Tondo on Wednesday.
According to the residents, the operative who turned the CCTV away was accompanied by both men in plainclothes and police uniform during the raid which killed 60-year-old Rolly Campo and two other drug suspects.
According to the granddaughter of the deceased and a witness to his death, he was unarmed and did not resist arrest but was shot in the chest by the police anyway.
“Dinikit po dito. Tas pinutok na lang po. Tas sabi ko ‘Huwag na lang nilang patayin, ikulong na lang nila kasi naglalaba lang naman ‘yun eh,’ sabi ko sa kanila,” she told GMA News. “Tapos po sabi nila wala daw po silang pake kahit mamatay pa daw lolo ko.”
[They aimed it here. Then they fired it. Then I said ‘Don’t kill him, just kill him because he was just washing his laundry,’ that what’s I said. Then they said they didn’t care even if my grandfather died.]
Lydia, Campo’s daughter, said one of the men even told her they were just going to ask her father some questions and told her leave.
“Sabi niya ‘Sige, kakausapin ko lang ‘yung tatay mo. Umalis ka na. Pagkasalita ng tatay ko na ‘Sige na, huwag mo na akong alalahanin,’ iniwan ko na siya. Tumakbo na ako palabas,” she said.
[He said ‘It’s all right, I will just talk to your father. You should leave. When my father said ‘It’s okay, don’t worry about about me,’ I left him. I ran outside.]
For her part, Campo’s wife Elizabeth admitted that he used drugs in the past but had stayed clean for 3 years and even yielded several times during Oplan Tokhang.
