1 dead, 5 hospitalized after eating shellfish affected by red tide in Samar

One person died while five others were rushed to the hospital after eating shellfish in Brgy. Tigdarano, Tarangnan, Samar.

The victim who died was identified as Rommel Balsote, 39. Meanwhile, his wife and children were rushed to the hospital, Elizabeth, 39; Laysa, 20; John Michael, 11; Justin and Princess, six and three years old respectively.

It was found that the family suffered from abdominal pain after eating shellfish.

According to the data gathered by Bombo Radyo from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), there are now 39 people who are hospitalized from eating shellfish.

Up to now the five coastal areas in Eastern Visayas are still affected by red tide together with Daram, Irong-irong Bay, Maqueda Bay, Villareal Bay and Cambatutay Bay in Western Samar.

BFAR is calling the attention of the general public to abstain from buying and eating any shellfish from the affected areas.
