Hopes were crushed early when Miss Philippines Mariel de Leon was not able to enter the top 15 during the Miss International 2017 held at the Tokyo Dome City in Japan.

A total of 69 contestants joined the prestigious pageant this year and our very own Kylie Verzosa passed down her Miss International crown to Miss Indonesia Kevin Lilliana.

De Leon tried twice in the Binibining Pilipinas until finally winning to represent the country in the Miss International.

De Leon might have lost the crown but she certainly learned a lot during the pageant. She shared that she feels like a better version of herself, she is now a “stronger, wiser and a smarter woman.”

She told ABS-CBN, “I really learned a lot from this experience. I made a lot of relationships with the other girls here and I am really proud of how far we’ve all come. I’m going to put this in my good memories.”

She also added that she feel really grateful for everyone who helped her along the way, “I would just like to thank all my supporters, not only in the Philippines but around the world. Thank you so much for showing me so much love and support. All your words and messages really warm my heart. I appreciate everyone.”

Her celebrity parents, Christopher and Sandy, are very much hopeful for a brighter future for their daughter.  Her mother said, “This is just the beginning for Mariel. Hindi dito nagtatapos. She’s looking forward to many things. There are many things ahead of her.” She also added that her daughter “really worked hard not only for the family or for herself but more for the country.”

Mariel de Leon will continue shooting with Coco Martin for their upcoming film, “Ang Panday.”
