Kristel de Catalina, a Pinay pole dancer emerged victorious in an international pole-dancing competition held last October 27-28 in Taiwan.

Imbued with “strength, coordination and dedication,” De Catalina won the women’s solo professional pole category during the 2017 Air Stars 2nd Asian Aerial Dance Art Competition.

De Catalina said she had to go though a daily extensive training with a mindset to be the best she can be.

“Pole [dancing] alone is a total body workout. You’re lifting your body weight and you tone your muscles. At the same time, you learn how to dance,” she said.

Being overwhelmed by the praise and the popularity she receives, she added: “Sobrang nagpapa-picture po sila. Iba’t ibang nation, mga foreigner. Ako po hindi ko po expect iyon.” [They took pictures with me, foreigners, I didn’t expect that.]

De Catalina hopes for pole dancing to grow further as a sport in the Philippines.

Last year, she also won the category women’s doubles of the Singapore Pole Challenge 2016 with her partner Jamaica Jornacion.
