Are you a scrooge or a kid inside?
Maybe that explains why the Filipinos are known to be “happy people” as we have the Christmas feel here in the Philippines as soon as the “ber” months kick in.
Although sometimes some people can’t stand their neighbors who play Christmas songs and display Christmas decors way too early, according to a psychology expert, those who put up Christmas decorations early are actually deemed to be happier than most.
Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown explained the psychological reasoning behind the fad as proven in a piece from the Journal of Environmental Psychology.
The behavioural expert said in an article by UNILAD that decorations act as an actor or pathway to old childhood magical emotions relating to excitement.
“Although there could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, most commonly for nostalgic reasons either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect,” he said.
“In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood,” he added.
McKeown also suggested that setting up Christmas display earlier than usual gives out “cues as a way of communicating their accessibility to neighbors.”
