Gabriela Women’s Partylist will investigate the use of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) sonic device against protesters against the ASEAN Summit.

Gabriela Women’s Party Representatives Emmi de Jesus and Arlene Brosas  blasted the use of the LRAD, calling it a “new level of state violence as there was an intent to harm the protesters during the scuffle between the protesters and anti-riot police along Taft Avenue.

According to Gabriela, a person may be exposed to a long lasting effect on the health of the sonic sound produced by 140-decibel LRAD,

Aside from hearing loss caused by loud and luminous sounds, it can also cause headaches and vertigo.

But the PNP said earlier that they have been using the LRAD for a long time and are also used in the dispersal of a crowd even overseas.

Militant groups believe the LRAD used by the PNP  came from the United States.

Nevertheless, the PNP said it is open to any investigation, stressing that they are only doing their job.
