• Three senators back Pres. Duterte’s plan to classify NPA as a terrorist group
• Senators Lacson, Honasan and Sotto believe it is about time the NPAs are declared as terrorists
• Lacson said the NPA lost its ideology since over a decade ago
At least three senators have expressed their support on President Rodrigo Duterte’s plan to declare the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, as a terrorist group.
As mentioned in an Inquirer story dated November 21, 2017, Senator Panfilo Lacson said it is about time the NPA is classified as a terror group since it had been acting like one since over a decade ago when it lost its ideology.
“They burn, destroy, kill innocent civilians to terrorize. They terrorize to sow fear and harass helpless civilians. They harass to extort under the guise of revolutionary taxation,” Lacson said.
Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto mentioned that a Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Mindanao had declared the NPA as terrorists.
“They have already been declared by an RTC in Mindanao as such, therefore, the President’s declaration is not far from coming,” he said.
Sen. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan said it is the President’s prerogative to declare the communist rebels as terrorists. The United States and the European Union have declared the NPA as a terrorist group, why can’t the Philippines, he said.
