It was a strong showing from the Ateneo Blue Eagles this Saturday afternoon after defeating the UST Growling Tigers, 102-83, to again add a W to their unblemished 12-0 record and still tops the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
UST is still winless after 13 tries.
Matt Nieto led the way for Ateneo since the opening at the Araneta Coliseum and ended with 19 markers built on five triples, with 3 assists.
But the story of the game belongs to Ateneo’s high-flying guard Thirdy Ravena with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and a highlight reel play.
With 2:20 left in the game and Ateneo is up 90-77, Anton Asistio missed a try from the 3-point line. Chibueze Ikeh was able to grab the offensive rebound. He saw Ravena cutting inside so he passed the ball.
Ravena then threw a vicious one-handed dunk over UST’s Regie Boy Basibas.
“It just happened. Swerte lang nakakuha ng offensive rebound. And I saw that no one was guarding the middle area of the zone,” recalled the 6-foot-2 forward.

After the dunk, a fiery Ravena looked towards the stands and made a “three-sign”. He explained after the game that the dunk was for his Father, Bong Ravena, who made a bet that for every dunk he would finish he will pocket Php 3,000 from him.
“Kasi ‘yung dad ko, may bet kami na tuwing nakaka dunk ako, bibigyan niya ako ng 3,000,” shared Ravena.
[Because my dad made a bet, that every time I dunk a ball he would give me Php 3,000]
