- Duterte fired the chairman and all the commissioners of PCUP
- Among the commissioners fired was a relative of Honeylet Avanceña
- Duterte identified PCUP Commissioner Melissa Avanceña Aradanas as Honeylet’s cousin
President Rodrigo Duterte recently fired the chairman and all the commissioners of the Presidential Commission for Urban Poor (PCUP) because they failed to meet as a collegial body and for making unnecessary trips abroad.
Among those fired, according to Rappler, was a relative of Honeylet Avanceña, President Duterte’s long-time partner.
In a speech he delivered during the Christmas party he hosted for the members of the media assigned to cover Malacañang on Tuesday, December 12, President Duterte identified PCUP Commissioner Melissa Avanceña Aradanas as Honeylet’s cousin.
“Pati siya tinanggal ko (I fired even her), but I told my wife, ‘You call your cousin and say, alis sila (they have to leave),’” said Duterte.
The President dismissed insinuations that Aradanas’ appointment as PCUP Commissioner was a case of nepotism. The official, as per Rappler, was a longtime rank and file employee of the PCUP, but gained commissioner status after she was appointed by President Duterte.
“Forget it, we are not married. It does not apply… only when you are married. At saka malayo na [and the family connection is distant],” he said.
