The government forces in the provinces of Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya and Nueva Ecija are preparing for possible attacks by the New People’s Army (NPA) on the 49th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) on December 26.
According to Lieutenant Colonel George Bergonia, commanding officer of the 84th Infantry Battalion in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, although the NPAs are in hiding after President Rodrigo Duterte declared the armed communists as terrorists, they are likely to launch attacks to commemorate the group’s anniversary.
According to Bergonia, there are two NPA groups in the Caraballo mountains of central Luzon.
One of them operates in eastern Pangasinan. Its members are located in the remote barangays of Umingan, San Quintin, Natividad, and San Nicolas. But after nine of its members were killed, including their leader Joe Managan alias Ka Razul, the group was disbanded.
The CPP was formed on December 26, 1968 in a remote barangay in Alaminos City, Pangasinan.
