The New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), staged an ambush against government security forces who were conducting relief operations for victims of tropical storm “Urduja” in Northern Samar.
According to an Inquirer story, two soldiers of the 20th Infantry Battalion were wounded in the attack. The ensuing firefight caused panic and fear among the residents already distressed by the tropical storm.
As per reports, the soldiers were conducting Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response Operations for the residents of Barangay Hinagonoyan, Catubig town when the terrorists, numbering around 50, opened fire at them.
The military condemned the NPA attack; saying it is a clear violation of the International Humanitarian Law.
The Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines in several parts of Mindanao are already in full alert. More attacks from the NPAs are expected as the CPP prepares for the celebration of its 49th founding anniversary on December 26.
