MANILA, Philippines – From sports icon to politician, 8-time world division Filipino champion and senator Manny Pacquiao is set to add another feather to his cap — a global ambassador for a foreign city.
This after the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on Tuesday it will soon name Pacquiao as the city’s global ambassador “for his leading role in enhancing the relationship and exchanges between South Korea and the Philippines”.
According to the Straits Times, Pacquiao will visit the Seoul City Hall where Mayor Park Won-soon will present him with the formal appointment in a ceremony late Tuesday afternoon.
“Senator Pacquiao is the boxing legend of Asia,” a statement released by the city government said. “Coming from a childhood of limited means, he is also known as the king of donations for the fortune he contributes every year to help better the lives of the poor in his community.
Pacquiao is not the first renowned foreign professionals appointed by the Seoul city government as its global ambassador this year.
In June, Russian maestro and opera director Valery Gergiev received the same accolade. The move is part of Seoul’s effort “to diversify and strengthen bilateral cooperation with key cities around the world.”
