“Keep an eye on her, because she’s going places,” says One Championship.

Zamboanga native Jomary Torres was just an unknown atomweight fighter. But she was catapulted to stardom after defeating Thailand’s Rika “Tiny Doll” Ishige, making their match being considered as one of the year’s best upsets.

Torress’ “Rear-Naked Choke” forced Ishige to tap out, which shocked the audience as she becomes the first fighter to stop the fast-rising Thai prodigy.

The Torres-Ishige match post – dubbed as “The Filipino Surprise” – was chosen as one of ONE Championship’s “scintillating” submissions of 2017.

Other ONE Championship submission highlights include May Ooi’s comeback win over Ann “Athena” Osman.

Filipina model Rome Trinidad became a fighter when she also took on Rika Ishige this December. However, this time, the Pinay lost to the Thai.

An upset occurs in a competition, frequently in sports, when the party popularly expected to win (the favorite), is defeated by an underdog whom the majority expects to lose, defying the conventional wisdom.
