According to an article by GMA News on Sunday, the victim was 23-year-old Randell Berin.
On January 10, Berin and his colleagues, were running around their camp when he suddenly collapsed.
Major Ronaldo Suscano of the 1st infantry Division said “Suddenly nung natumba, nag-collapse. Umaga ‘yon, they’re having their run, team run… sabay-sabay naman silang tumakbo galing doon sa training school sa taas papunta dito sa ruta nila. Then suddenly, according sa mga kasama niya sa team, eh bigla na lang tumumba. Ni-rush nila sa station hospital namin.”
[He suddenly collapsed that morning, they were having their team run… they were all running together from the training school towards their route, and suddenly, he collapsed according to his teammates. We immediately rushed him to our station hospital.]
Doctors tried to revive Berin at the station hospital.
He was then transferred to a hospital in Pagadian City where he was comatose for four days.
According to the Philippine Army’s report, Berin was declared dead on January 14 due to “hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy”, or HIE, a brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain, also commonly known as intrapartum asphyxia.
The PHL Army promised to assist Berin’s family.
