- The 9th edition of the Le Tour de Filipinas has been postponed due to the imminent threat brought about by the recent volcanic activities of Mt. Mayon
- The International Cycling Union and race participants have already been informed about the postponement
Ube Media Inc., the organizer, has decided to reschedule the annual cycling event for the safety of the participants and everyone in the race entourage.
The tour’s route is primarily around the perimeter of the volcano, as well as in the nearby provinces of Catanduanes and Sorsogon.
The Category 2.2 race was scheduled February 18 to 21, with 15 squads, mostly foreign-based continental teams, participating.
Stages One (February 18) and Two (February 19) were supposed to be held in two out-and-back courses in Catanduanes’ capital of Virac.
The teams, foreign and local, which have enrolled for the race were also informed of the inevitable postponement.
Mt. Mayon’s volcanic activities continue as a number of tremors have been felt in Luzon.
Thousands of locals have already been evacuated as the volcano’s activity continues. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.
The Le Tour de Filipinas is an annual professional road bicycle racing stage race held in Luzon since 1955 as part of the UCI Asia Tour. Its previous names include the Tour of Luzon, Marlboro Tour, Tour of Calabarzon, Tour Pilipinas and Padyak Pinoy, before carrying the current name.
