President Rodrigo Duterte is now looking at increasing the salaries of the teachers. After the government was able to significantly increase the pay of soldiers and policemen, they are now making moves to include the teachers.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the announcement that the President already gave instructions to the budget department to find ways to increase teachers’ salary. They are looking at its submission to be in time for the second tax reform package to the Congress.

Roque still cannot give figures but hopes that they can double the salary. He was quoted by ABS-CBN as aying, “Judging by what he wanted for the PNP and AFP, it could also be that he is aiming for the doubling the salary of teachers.”

This would be a dream come true for teachers, especially after the The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition had been asking the administration for an increase. An article by ABS-CBN quoted The Department of Education (DepEd) that a Teacher I under salary grade 11 currently earns P19,620, while a Master Teacher IV (salary grade 21) earns P47,779.
