- Speaker Alvarez earlier stated that he will give “zero budget” to provinces against federalism
- He clarified his statement and said that it was only a joke and were just “empty words”
- The speaker said he couldn’t give “zero budget” because it needs to go through the senate’s approval
Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez clarified his earlier statement that he will be giving ‘zero budget’ to provinces that will not support federalism; saying that it was only a joke.
In a interview, Speaker Alvarez soft-pedals on his earlier statement. He said that sometimes he needs to make jokes during speeches and wonders why others take it seriously. He was quoted by GMA saying: “Alam mo iyong pag nag-speech ka, kailangan mo ng kaunting biro-biro, ‘di ba? Iyon lang naman iyon. Ewan ko ba bakit sineryoso nila.”
He clarified the controversial statement he made during an oath-taking ceremony for new PDP-Laban members, “Nagbibiro lang ako na, alam ninyo nagpapasalamat ako na sumali sila doon sa partido at nagpapasalamat din ako na iyong kanilang mga representatives ay nasa majority kaya nga hindi sila makakakuha ng zero budget, ‘di ba? Hindi naman seryoso iyon.”
[I was only joking. I was thanking all those who joined our party and thankful that their representatives are in the majority that’s why they will not get zero budget. It was not serious.]
The speaker added that others are just talking too much about it when they were just ‘empty words’ because he couldn’t do it alone. He said, “At tsaka ‘yung iba naman putak nang putak, alam naman nilang hindi ko magagawa ‘yun, ang pagze-zero ng budget.”
“Kasi dumadaan ‘yan sa Senado. Those are empty words actually,” he claimed.
