- The Department of Foreign Affairs launched a portal exclusive for first-time OFWs who are in need of a passport
- First-time OFWs do not have access to the express lane of the consular office unlike those who are already actively working abroad
- The portal will also serve as an anti-illegal recruitment measure by ensuring that those who can access it all came from the accredited recruitment agencies
The Department of Foreign Affairs launched a new portal that will specifically cater to first-time Overseas Filipino Workers who are in need of a passport.
First-time OFWs still do not have the privilege to use the express lanes of consular offices. To make their passport application easier and more convenient, the portal was made exclusively for them.
Sec. Peter Alan Cayetano was quoted by GMA saying, “For the longest time, hindi namin tinatanggap unless balik-manggagawa, meaning bumalik lang or may second contract. What we did now, when you go on the internet, there’s a separate for first-time [OFWs]. Nandun na rin ang requirements.”
[For the longest time, we do not accept unless returning-OFW, meaning they had just returned or they have a second contract.]
Sec. Cayetano also explained that aside from helping first-time OFWs save time and effort, it will also help them to evade fraud and illegal recruiters. The portal can only be accessed by first-time OFWs through usernames and passwords given by any of the 170 recruitment agencies licensed by Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and registered with the DFA. All 170 recruitment agencies will be given 6 passport appointment slots daily.
Sec. Cayetano reiterated that no one should try to pretend to be an OFW to have access because that would be unfair to the real OFWs.
