On Tuesday, January 9, 2018, heavy rains triggered mudslides in Southern California; taking lives of at least 17 people. The mudslide covered highways, and caused heavy damage to properties like vehicles and houses.

According to Fox, most deaths were believed to have occurred in Montecito – where the home of some celebrities are, including Oprah Winfrey, Ellen deGeneres, Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid. These celebrities have posted on their social media accounts sharing their thoughts and experiences about the calamity.

“What a day! Praying for our community again in Santa Barbara. Woke up to this blazing gas fire. Then swipe left to see how deep the mud is in my backyard. Helicopters rescuing my neighbors,” Oprah wrote on one of her posts.

In another post from Oprah, she wrote: “Thanks everyone for your prayers and concern. My property is fine. Some mud, and minor damage that pales in comparison to what my neighbours are going thru.”

Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres also tweeted on Thursday, June 11, 2018, a photo showing the current situation of the street in front of her house. She wrote: “This is the street in front of our house. I don’t know anything about our house yet. I’m heartbroken for our community in Montecito. I’m devastated for the families who lost loved ones. I’m grateful to all rescue workers. Please send love to Montecito.”

Victoria’s Secret Models Bella and Gigi Hadid, who grew up in Montecito, also expressed their thoughts for their beloved hometown.

My beautiful home town of Montecito…. Where my roots were placed, where my mother raised me and my family. Completely under water. I really can't believe it. I am praying and thinking so much for our friends in the hospital and their families that are still missing. For our horses, dogs, cats-all animals- that gave us happiness, who are now searching for a dry place to lay their heads.. our elementary school… The freeway to drive to school and where @mini_jk_imbig and I would walk after school.. under water. My heart is broken…. I remember when something similar happened in La Conchita about 12 years ago, so close to us and how much it took to rebuild… I can't imagine how Montecito feels now. I am so sorry. As always- Please send websites for donations. I'm ready to help. Thank you to the rescue, fire fighters and security teams in SB for staying strong and your hard work to pull out anybody and anything in sight. My love is with you so deeply SB.
