- As a human rights lawyer, Gabriela expects Harry Roque to speak up about the human rights violations, specifically about comfort women
- President Duterte and Speaker Roque have been mum about the issue
- A 7-foot bronze statue of a comfort woman was erected along Roxas Boulevard
Gabriela Women’s Party challenged Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque to speak up about the plight of the comfort women.
Gabriela representative Arlene Brosas said they are waiting and expecting for Roque to issue a statement in light of the controversial comfort woman statue in Roxas Boulevard.
She was quoted by GMA saying, “Ine-expect talaga namin na magsalita siya (Roque) kaugnay nito, actually ang akala nga namin magre-react na siya nung time na nagbigay (ang) Department of Foreign Affairs nung sulat eh.” [We expected him to speak up about it. Actually, we thought he would have reacted even during the time when DFA issued the letter.]
“Hinihintay niya na lang siguro na magsalita ‘yung iba pang sectors at iba pang personalities …but then, we are expecting na mag-react siya kaugnay dito,” Brosas continued. [Maybe he is still waiting for other sectors and personalities to speak up but we are still expecting for him to react.]
Roque, a human rights lawyer, had been mum when issues of the plight of comfort women was brought up recently.
A 7-foot bronze statue of a “comfort woman” was erected along Roxas Boulevard. The Department of Foreign Affairs sent a letter to Manila City Hall officials and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines about the statue.
The Japan Internal Affairs and Communications had expressed their concern about the statue to President Duterte but he is also mum about the issue.
