Central Luzon’s editorial cartooning champion Aleoh Gallardo, Grade 9, was set to compete for the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Dumaguete — when, suddenly, his journey towards his dreams ended following a tragic twist of fate.

In an article written by John Joshua B. Avengoza, Aries L. Atencio, and Erjann Jireh C. Fernandez of, it was disclosed that 14-year-old Gallardo passed away after his potassium level suddenly crashed on Christmas Eve.

“It was an appalling news. A total shock to everyone who knows him. Even up to now, I still can’t believe that he passed away. It was very unfortunate and untimely,” said his mentor Hark Herald Sarmiento; school paper adviser of The Young Martyrs.

In November 23, 2017, Sarmiento happily shared that he and Gallardo finally have their “passes” to the NSPC, after the latter became Central Luzon’s champion in the Editorial Cartooning (English) category.

These your masterpieces are truly remarkable. Rest in the grace of God,” emotional Sarmiento expressed in a separate post; sharing some of his student’s editorial cartoons.
