• The ambushed lawyer and his companions may face charges of illegal possession of firearms
• The police are also looking at the possibility of charging them with homicide after one of the attackers was killed
• The slain attacker was identified as a dismissed police officer
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar said Atty. Argel Joseph Cabatbat and his three companions may face charges of illegal possession of firearms.
Atty. Cababat was the target of an ambush perpetrated by three suspects on two motorcycles on Tuesday, February 13, along EDSA in Quezon City, where one of the attackers, a dismissed police officer, was killed when the lawyer’s driver rammed the suspects’ motorcycles.
As mentioned in the Inquirer story dated February 17, 2018, Chief Supt. Eleazar said one of Atty Cabatbat’s companions identified as John Ramos shot it out with the suspects. Cabatbat claimed the gun used was owned by his uncle, but he failed to present pertinent documents, including permit to carry firearms.
Eleazar said the police are also looking at the possibility of charging Cabatbat and his companions – Ramos, Cabatbat’s driver Ardee Llaneras and Rodel De la Cruz – with homicide for the death of one of the suspects; the dismissed cop identified as Police Officer 1 Mark Ayeras.
“We are studying whether we would file homicide charges against them because someone was killed,” Eleazar said.
