- Demafelis was alive, but unconscious when the suspect placed her inside the freezer
One of the prime suspects in the death of Joanna Demafelis, the overseas Filipina worker (OFW) whose remains were found inside a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Kuwait, admitted putting the victim inside the freezer.
Citing a report by Bombo Radyo Iloilo, Philippine News said the slain OFW’s Lebanese employer identified as Nader Issam Assaf admitted to the police that Demafelis was still alive, but unconscious when he put her inside the freezer.
Assaf said he panicked when the victim blacked out due to the beatings she suffered from his Syrian wife, Mona Hassoun.
The suspect, arrested by the Interpol in his house in Lebanon, said his wife is no longer in Lebanon, but possibly hiding in Syria.
Assaf was arrested on the same day President Rodrigo Duterte visited the wake of Demafelis in Iloilo.
Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed the arrest of Assaf.
“The President welcomes the news that Nader Essam Assaf is now in the hands of authorities in Lebanon. Assaf’s arrest is a critical first step in our quest for justice for Joanna and we are thankful to our friends in Kuwait and Lebanon for their assistance,” ?Cayetano said in a statement.
